Read article--The Crossroads of History: The Struggle against Jihad and Supremacist Ideologies

"....The true challenge of Islamic supremacism to America and the free world is not about Islam, Islamism, or terrorism, but about us.

It is a historic challenge to determine whether we truly have the courage of our convictions on equality and liberty and we are willing to fight for these ideals, or if we will instead accept the continuing growth of anti-freedom ideologies here and around the world...."

Methodology
Exchanged e-mails with Ahmad while on active duty on the USS Benfold, a guided-missile destroyer, in 2000 and 2001. He allegedly purchased videos promoting violent jihad, or holy war. In those e-mails, Abujihaad discussed naval military briefings and praised those who attacked the USS Cole in 2000. The documents retrieved from Ahmad show drawings of Navy battle groups and discuss upcoming missions. They also say the battle group could be attacked using small weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades. Abujihaad's messages also disclosed that the battle group would pass through the Strait of Hormuz 19 days later, adding: "They have nothing to stop a small craft with RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) etc. except their Seals' stinger missiles. . . . Please destroy message."
Possible Motivations, Problems
US Navy sailor Paul Hall/Hassan Abujihaad email to Azzam Publications six months after the October 2000 USS Cole attack:

"Brothers/Sisters of Al-Islam: I am a Muslim stationed onboard a US warship currently operating deployed to the Arabian Gulf.

It shall be noted before Usama's latest video was viewed by massive people all over the world. That psychological anxiety had already set in on America's forces everywhere. All this is due to the martyrdom operation against the USS Cole. Since then every warship station either on the Western or Eastern shores of America who come to operate in the 5th Fleet op area has to be given a force protect brief. Well during the brief, I attended there was one thing stuck out like thorns on a rose bush. I do not know who was the originator of this either top brass or an American politician. Well here is his/her statement: "America has Never faced an enemy with no borders, no government, no diplomats, nor a standing army that pledges allegiance to no state."

Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! I give takbirs because I know deep down in my heart that the American enemies that this person has discribe [sic] is the Mujahideen Feesabilillah. These brave men are the true champions and soldiers of Allah in this dunya. I understand fully that they are the men who have brought honor to this weak ummah in the lands of jihad Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, etc. Alhamdulillah! With their only mission in life to make Allah's name and laws supreme over this world.

I want to let it be known that I have been in the Middle East for almost a total of 3 months. For these 3 months you can truly see the effects of this psychological warfare taking a toll on junior and high ranking officers. But after the latest video supporting Palestine, the top brass and American officials were running around like headless chickens very afraid, wondering if there is a possible threat. But this time the American population got wind of this and they came to know just how afraid the US government is. Thomas J. Friedman wrote an article in the New York Times called: "What it takes to make the Americans turn tail, run" This article was distributed on my ship and most of the sailors said it was so true about the American government, and they feel like they are working for a bunch of scary pussies.

Identified/
Investigation
Investigation that began in Connecticut followed a suspected terrorist network across the country and into Europe and the Middle East. Authorities discovered Abujihaad's military e-mail address among the computer files, and he had a secret security clearance that would have allowed him access to that material.

An FBI cooperating source (CS) in Chicago became acquainted last year with Derreck Shareef, Abujihaad's ex-roommate in Phoenix, and helped set up a sting.
During a search of Ahmad's computers, investigators said they discovered files containing classified information about the positions of U.S. Navy ships and discussing their susceptibility to attack. Investigation was run out of Connecticut because Ahmad allegedly used an Internet service provider there to host one of his fundraising Web sites

Spy Agencies Fear Some Applicants Are Terrorists

U.S. counterintelligence officials are increasingly concerned that Al Qaeda sympathizers or operatives may have tried to get jobs at the CIA and other U.S. agencies in an effort to spy on American counterterrorist efforts.

So far, about 40 Americans who sought positions at U.S. intelligence agencies have been red-flagged and turned away for possible ties to terrorist groups, the officials said. Several such applicants have been detected at the CIA.

"We think terrorist organizations have tried to insinuate people into our hiring pools," said Barry Royden, a 39-year CIA veteran who is a counterintelligence instructor at the agency.

Also, three senior counterintelligence officials said they feared terrorist groups may be trying to place an "insider" in America's fast-growing counterterrorist planning and operational networks as part of a long-term strategy to compromise U.S. intelligence efforts....(Los Angeles Times, 8 March 2005)

A Spy’s Motivation: For Love of Another Country

........A new study by a Defense Department contractor shows that divided loyalty, usually on the part of naturalized Americans with roots in a foreign land, has become the dominant motive.

From 1947 to 1990, the study found, fewer than 1 in 5 Americans charged with spying were acting solely or primarily out of patriotic, as opposed to ideological, loyalty to a foreign country. Since 1990, according to the study’s author, Katherine L. Herbig, divided loyalty has been the sole or primary motive in about half of all cases.

“Dual loyalty is a problem we haven’t seen on such a scale since the Revolution,” when many colonists swore allegiance to the British king, said Joel F. Brenner, the top counterintelligence official in the office of the director of national intelligence.

.....But even as the government aggressively courts first-generation and second-generation Americans, the new statistics suggest, it must keep a wary eye out for those whose real loyalty is to their native country or to militant Islam.....(New York Times, 20 April 2008)

Terrorist Espionage at Sea

As a task force of US battleships steamed towards the Middle East in the spring of 2001 on a mission to patrol the Persian Gulf, a sailor aboard one of those vessels was pursuing an entirely different mission. His name was Hassan Abu-Jihaad, and he was serving as a signalman aboard the USS Benfold. Little did anyone know at the time, he was also a homegrown radical who was secretly in touch with al Qaeda financiers, sharing classified details about the vulnerabilities and movements of the battleships just six months after al Qaeda operatives had killed 17 Americans aboard the USS Cole in the port of Yemen……(Common Voice, 11 Mar 08)

Islam Convert Who Leaked Navy Secrets Faces 25 Years

With the conviction Wednesday of a former U.S. sailor accused of leaking military secrets that could have been used to kill scores of his shipmates, federal prosecutors in Connecticut can turn their attention to what is expected to become a second, significant post-9/11 terror trial. As a result of his conviction, Hassan Abu-Jihaad, an unremarkable, 32-year-old native Californian and convert to Islam, faces as much as 25 years in prison. Those in the courtroom said he seemed unmoved when a jury, deliberating less than two days, found him guilty of providing material support to terrorists and disclosing classified national defense information. Prosecutors now are expected to concentrate their efforts on Babar Ahmad and Syed Talha Ahsan, two British citizens who, although absent from the courtroom, became prominent figures in Abu-Jihaad's six-day trial at U.S. District Court in New Haven. The two computer experts are accused of operating Azzam Publications, the al-Qaida-connected Internet business in London to which Abu-Jihaad leaked detailed information in 2001 about the movements and vulnerabilities of a U.S. Naval Battle Group deployed to the Persian Gulf……(Hartford Courant, 6 Mar 08)

Phoenix man guilty of aiding terrorists

Those who met Hassan Abu-Jihaad describe him as mild-mannered, polite and unobtrusive; a California native who converted to Islam while living in Phoenix in 1997. But, on Wednesday, Abu-Jihaad became something more sinister: the face of treason and homegrown Islamic terrorism - and a reminder that the Internet can inflame radical violence halfway around the world. A federal jury in Connecticut took less than 24 hours to convict the former U.S. Navy sailor on charges he slipped classified details of American fleet movements to a Web site accused of assisting the terrorist group al-Qaida. In May, Abu-Jihaad, 32, could be sentenced for up to 25 years in prison for providing material support to terrorists and disclosing classified national-defense information…..(Arizona Republic, 6 Mar 08)

Ex-Sailor Convicted in Terrorism Case

A former Navy sailor was convicted Wednesday of leaking details about ship movements to suspected terrorism supporters, an act that could have endangered his own crewmates. Jurors convicted Hassan Abu-Jihaad, 32, of Phoenix of providing material support to terrorists and disclosing classified national defense information on the second day of deliberations. The American-born Muslim convert formerly known as Paul R. Hall faces up to 25 years in federal prison when he is sentenced in May. His attorney, Dan LaBelle, said an appeal was likely……(AP, 5 Mar 08)

Evan Kohlmann's Expert Report from U.S. v. Abu-Jihaad
The NEFA Foundation is making available the expert witness report filed by NEFA Senior Investigator Evan Kohlmann on behalf of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut in U.S. v. Hassan Abu-Jihaad.  On March 5, a jury in New Haven found Abu-Jihaad guilty of providing material support to terrorists and disclosing classified national defense information.   During the trial, federal prosecutors detailed how Abu-Jihaad--a former U.S. Navy signalman--had secretly passed along details regarding the planned movements of U.S. Navy vessels in the Persian Gulf to an Al-Qaida website known as "Azzam Publications."  The information was later recovered by British authorities during a raid of the London home of Babar Ahmad, the former administrator in charge of Azzam Publications…..(NEFA, 5 Mar 08)

Ex-Sailor's Leak Case Goes to Jury

Months after the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors docked in Yemen, a battle group led by the USS Constellation prepared to sail for the Persian Gulf. The U.S. was saber rattling. Retaliation against the Taliban in Afghanistan and al Qaeda for the Cole attack was anticipated. Unbeknownst to Navy leadership, a signalman on the destroyer Benfold was in direct communication at the time with a British-based publishing house openly supporting the Taliban and Jihadi movements. He ordered graphic videos of Chechen rebels attacking and killing Russian soldiers. Jurors are deliberating the fate of that sailor, Hassan Abu-Jihaad, who stands accused of providing material support to terrorists and of leaking information about the Constellation battle group's deployment to people devoted to killing Americans……(IPT, 5 Mar 08)

Navy Case Goes To Jury

…Although computer analysts could find no direct electronic link between Abu-jihaad and transmission of the Battle Group document, Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen B. Reynolds told the jury Monday that an exhaustive, global investigation by a variety of security agencies compiled enough other evidence to convict him of the leak.  Among other things, Reynolds said, Abu-jihaad was the only member of the U.S. armed forces in regular e-mail communication with Azzam at the time of the leak…..(Courant, 4 Mar 08)

Jury hears closing arguments in ex-sailor's terrorism trial

…Dan LaBelle, Abu-Jihaad's attorney, tried to show Monday that many details of ship movements he is accused of leaking to suspected terrorism supporters were publicly available through news reports, press releases and Web sites. He also noted that Navy officials testified that the details were full of errors. "There are so many errors in that document that it could not possibly have come from an insider,"…..(AP, 4 Mar 08)

Defense rests in case of sailor accused of aiding terrorists

…The defense rested Monday and the jury was getting instructions. Abu-Jihaad did not take the stand and the only witness the defense called was a researcher, Molly Knight Raskin. She testified Monday about an article in a San Diego newspaper that detailed the departure of Abu-Jihaad's battle group and listed ships that would be deploying. The paper also had a column that allowed readers to follow a battle group's movements. On cross-examination, Knight Raskin said the column included only a ship's present location, not its future movements, and was at one point discontinued due to security concerns……(AP, 3 Mar 08)

Prosecutors: Documents matched ship path

…Dennis Amador, a quartermaster and Abu-Jihaad's supervisor on the guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold, testified Thursday that keeping ship movements confidential is so important that he uses code even to tell his wife where he is… Files found on a computer disk recovered by authorities from an alleged terror supporter's home also included the number and type of personnel on each ship and the ships' capabilities and ended with instructions to destroy the message….(AP, 29 Feb 08)

Prosecutors try to show leaked documents matched ship movements

Prosecutors at the federal trial of a former sailor on terrorism charges tried to show Thursday that a stop by his ship in Hawaii matched details of ship movements that he allegedly leaked to terrorism supporters…Abu-Jihaad, an American-born Muslim convert formerly known as Paul R. Hall, is accused of leaking information that could have doomed his own ship. He was a Navy signalman and received an honorable discharge in 2002…Adam Conaway, a Navy quartermaster, testified Thursday that Abu-Jihaad's ship, the guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold, stopped in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for ammunition on March 20, 2001. The leaked documents recovered by authorities indicated that some ships would load Tomahawk missiles on that date… Prosecutors acknowledge that they don't have direct proof that Abu-Jihaad leaked details of ship movements, but cite e-mails he exchanged with the suspected terrorism supporters……(Stamford Advocate, 28 Feb 08)

Top Official Testifies in Navy Case

…Prosecutors also introduced a document showing Abu-Jihaad had a secret security clearance, saying that could have given him access to the ship movements. He was charged in the same case that led to the 2004 arrest of Babar Ahmad, a British computer specialist accused of running Web sites to raise money, appeal for fighters and provide equipment such as gas masks and night vision goggles for terrorists. Ahmad is to be extradited to the U.S……(AP, 27 Feb 08)

Sailor's Terror Trial Opens With Story Of Discovery

…The sailor, ex-Navy Signalman Hassan Abu-jihaad, is accused of sending explicit information about the movements, armament, vulnerability and formation of a U.S. naval battle group to the British operators of a network of Internet sites that an Islamic terror expert later testified Monday was closely linked to al-Qaida...The three detectives, assigned to counter terror matters in London, said they discovered the compromised navy battle group information in December 2003 during a search of the home of Babar Ahmad. Ahmad, who has since been charged in the U.S. in a case related to that of Abu-jihaad, allegedly was one of the operators of Azzam Publications, a now-defunct group of websites that terror experts say pioneered the use of the Internet as a tool for raising money, volunteers and weaponry for Islamic insurgents in Europe and the Middle East……(Courant, 26 Feb 08)

Ex-sailor's terrorism trial opens

The trial of a former Navy sailor on terrorism charges opened Monday with British investigators describing how they found details about the vulnerability of the sailor's naval battle group in the London home of an alleged terrorism supporter.
American prosecutors allege that the sailor, Hassan Abujihaad, sent those details to London… The investigation that resulted in charges against Abujihaad also led to the 2004 arrest of Babar Ahmad, a British computer specialist accused of running websites to raise money, appeal for fighters and provide equipment such as gas masks and night vision goggles for terrorists…..(AP, 26 Feb 08)

Trial begins for sailor facing terrorism charges

…Hassan Abu Jihaad joined the Navy in 1997 and in 1998 was assigned to the USS Benfold, a guided missile destroyer that sailed from California to the Persian Gulf in early 2001. The FBI says that Abu Jihaad started exchanging e-mails with a suspected terrorist, Babar Ahmad, back in 2000 through a computer service based in Connecticut. Ahmad is accused of running Web sites to raise money to support terrorists. A British investigator testified today that a search at Ahmad's parent's house in 2003 uncovered a computer disk with details of ship movements….(WTNH, 25 Feb 08)

Jury picked for trial of ex-sailor in terror case

…Five male and 11 female jurors, including four alternates, were selected Wednesday in New Haven federal court. Jury selected in terrorism trial of former US Navy sailor

The trial of a former US Navy sailor accused of leaking classified information to Islamic militants began in the state of Connecticut Wednesday with jury selection…He was arrested in Arizona last year and accused of passing secret information, including the details of a US Navy battle group, to two British nationals from an organization known as Azzam Publications. Judge Rules 'Coded Talk' by Ex-Sailor in Terror Case Admissible

…Authorities allege that Hassan Abu-Jihaad of Phoenix leaked a document describing the location and vulnerabilities of a Navy battle group to suspected terrorism supporters in London. His trial starts Feb. 25. The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Mark Kravitz is a boost to prosecutors, who have acknowledged that they don't have direct proof that Abu-Jihaad leaked details of ship movements.

Instead, prosecutors hope what they say are Abu-Jihaad's coded references to terrorism plots, his communications with the group in London, and his destruction of the videos after news reports about the case will persuade a jury to convict him of helping terrorists target U.S. citizens… In 2004, when British computer specialist Babar Ahmad was arrested on terrorism charges, investigators discovered details of the ship movements among his files. Abu-Jihaad had exchanged e-mails with Ahmad while on active duty on the USS Benfold, a guided-missile destroyer, in 2000 and 2001, according to an FBI affidavit…….(AP, 31 Jan 08)

Judge Rejects Patriot Act Challenge

…Hassan Abu-Jihaad's attorneys had claimed elements of the USA Patriot Act used to obtain the evidence were unconstitutional, and cited a ruling by a federal judge in Oregon striking down key portions of the law. U.S. District Court Judge Mark Kravitz, however, said he disagreed with that ruling, and noted that other courts have found that the law does not infringe on constitutional rights.

Authorities allege that Abu-Jihaad leaked a document describing the location and vulnerabilities of a Navy battle group to suspected terrorism supporters in London. He pleaded not guilty in April to charges of providing material support to terrorists and disclosing classified national-defense information, and is to stand trial Feb. 25……(AP, 25 Jan 08)

Was American-born Hassan Abujihaad plotting to attack a San Diego military base? A federal judge is deciding that now

…Abujihaad, an American born Paul Hall, was arrested March 7 in Phoenix, and indicted March 21 in Bridgeport on charges of material support of terrorism and disclosing previously classified information. In 2001, while in the Navy, Abujihaad allegedly emailed classified information about ships' locations in the Middle East to Azzam Publications, a pro-jihad website hosted by a Connecticut company. This was months before 9/11…In U.S. District Court in New Haven last week, government lawyers played dozens of recorded conversations between Abujihaad, his friend Derrick Shareef and an FBI informant, William "Jameel" Crisman…..(New Haven Advocate, 6 Dec 07)

Ex-sailor accused of plotting to attack San Diego base

A former U.S. Navy sailor, already charged with divulging classified ship movements to British extremists linked to Al Qaeda, also discussed details of a previously undisclosed plan to attack a San Diego military base in late 2006 with at least two other men, authorities said Wednesday. Testifying in a federal court hearing in New Haven, Conn., FBI Special Agent David Dillon said Hassan Abujihaad, 31, of Phoenix had extensive discussions about the alleged plot with an Illinois man, Derrick Shareef, and to a lesser degree with an undercover FBI informant Shareef had introduced to him…Shareef and Abujihaad talked in 2003, while they were roommates in Phoenix, of attacking a military recruiting station; in 2004 proposed attacking the unspecified San Diego base with sniper fire; and in 2006 took concrete steps to pursue such an attack.....(LA Times, 29 Nov 07)
