A Look Back . . . Benjamin Franklin: Founding Father of Covert Action
With the beginning of the Revolutionary War came the birth of American
intelligence. Since then, the tradecraft of intelligence has been developed and
improved to better protect our nation. Our nation’s birthday is a good time to
reflect on how intelligence tradecraft began. (CIA)
China corporate spy David Yen
Lee - case paints outside the
numbers
He (David Yen Lee) booked a one-way flight from Chicago to Shanghai,
stashing in his carry-on bag a computer thumb drive with 214 documents from the
company he had just quit.
Before he could leave for the airport, the
FBI raided his
Arlington Heights apartment, seizing a half-dozen computers, a dozen
external hard drives, 13 additional thumb drives and a pair of PlayStations
capable of storing data.
. . . . The 52-year-old Taiwan native faces a five-count indictment alleging
theft of trade secrets from Valspar Corp., a publicly traded maker of household
paint and other coating products. He has yet to enter a plea, and his attorney
declined to comment.
The case highlights the growing problem of economic
espionage, and the difficulties of protecting intellectual property from
competitors in
China. Hard times have ratcheted up the pressure to take all available
shortcuts for obtaining new business, noted Anthony Dayrit, an equity analyst at
Morningstar Inc. who follows Valspar.
. . . . These cases can have significant national security implications. In
recent years, the FBI has boosted its counterintelligence efforts against
scientists, students and front companies suspected of spying for the Chinese
government.
In the Chicago area, explosive allegations have been
leveled in a recent military - and industrial-espionage case against ex-Motorola
Inc. software engineer Hanjuan Jin, who has said she is innocent.
. . . . Federal investigators allege that Lee parlayed those secrets into an
executive job at the competing Nippon Paint, Asia's leading paint manufacturer.
His plans began taking shape at least five months
earlier, the Feds allege. Working as the technical director for new-product
development out of Valspar's office in suburban Wheeling, Lee asked the company
in November to replace the puny 80-gigabyte laptop computer he had been issued
with a 240-gigabyte model. Two days after he got it, the Feds say, he started
downloading chemical formulas and other data.
The PhD chemist wasn't particularly careful about
covering his tracks, court documents suggest. During a business trip to China in
February just days before he took his new job, he "aggressively" questioned his
counterparts at Valspar's Chinese subsidiary about Nippon Paint. A week before
his start date, he set up a
LinkedIn business-networking profile citing his new post at "a major paint
company in Asia." He also tried to recruit a fellow Valspar scientist, the
documents say. (Chicago Tribune)

Keep an Eye on Kazakhstan
. . . .Kazakhstan is the 2nd largest producer of uranium in the world and has,
by far, the largest uranium reserves in Eurasia. The only country that has more
uranium than Kazakhstan is Australia, but Australia can never wield the
influence over the Muslim world that Kazakhstan can wield. Nuclear energy speaks
volumes in today's world.
Shimon Peres had multiple agendas in going to Kazakhstan. One of those reasons
was expanding relations between Israel and a significant Muslim country. Another
reason had to do with nuclear energy. Peres wanted assurances that Kazakhstan
would not be supplying nuclear fuel to Iran. The promises were received, but
promises from Kazakhstan are not completely reliable.
Last year I wrote about a train that departed from Kyrgyzstan, crossed into
Kazakhstan and then crossed the border into Uzbekistan where it was intercepted
and stopped. The train was making its way to Iran. The train was filled with
uranium. It had already traveled through and crossed over the entire Kazakh
before it was stopped on the Uzebeki side of the border.
The Uzebeki border guards were shocked to find the uranium. They sent it back
and alerted the Kazakh government. In retrospect, that was probably not the
wisest move. According to most people in the know, including International
Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohammed el Baradei, Kazakhstan is one of
the most nuclear-trafficked states in the world.
Uranium is for Kazakhstan what oil is for Saudi Arabia. Every country will want
it, many countries will need it and Kazakhstan will be one of the only countries
that has it. Estimates for the revenue Kazakhstan will reap exporting their
natural resource are coming in high, as high as $15 - $20 billion a year for
this sleepy little Asian Muslim country.
Central Asia is the future battlefield for the conflict between East and West.
It is where Islam retains a strong moderate tradition, it is also where the
Fundamentalist population is growing. Kazakhstan realizes that it is coming of
age and that it will very soon be in control of the world's supply of nuclear
fuel much the same way OPEC is in control of the world's oil production and
supply. (FrontPage)
India, Kazakhstan working on inter-governmental nuke energy cooperation pact
India and Kazakhstan are actively working to finalize the inter-governmental
agreement for cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, revealed
Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Kairat Umarov, during an interaction with
select media on Tuesday evening. (Thaindian)
Iranians walk out when President Peres speaks at Kazakhstan parley
Iranian delegates walked out of an interfaith conference in Kazakhstan yesterday
when President Shimon Peres got up to speak.
The Iranian delegation was headed by Mehdi Mostafavi, a
senior advisor to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He returned to the room
only after Peres had finished speaking.
That the speech would not pass smoothly had been clear
from the moment the Iranians learned that Peres was to be the guest of honor at
the conference: They promptly threatened not to participate at all. Not only is
Peres not a religious leader, they charged, "he is a man of violence." (Haaretz)
