US court admits Guantanamo cases

The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal by Guantanamo Bay detainees that they be allowed to challenge their confinement in federal courts. The move reverses the court's decision in April, when it refused to rule on whether the men had a right to take their cases to federal courts. Secret trials for terrorists, says US judge

A top-ranking US judge has stunned a conference of Australian judges and barristers in Chicago by advocating secret trials for terrorists, more surveillance of Muslim populations across North America and an end to counter-terrorism efforts being "hog-tied" by the US constitution. Judge Richard Posner, a supposedly liberal-leaning jurist regarded by many as a future US Supreme Court candidate, said traditional concepts of criminal justice were inadequate to deal with the terrorist threat and the US had "over-invested" in them….(Australian, 29 Jun 07)

On April 27, 2006, Lebanese authorities arrested Beirut resident Assem Hammoud (a.k.a.Amer al-Andalusi) and charged him with terrorism-related offenses.1 According to the FBI and the Lebanese government, Hammoud confessed to plotting an attack on U.S. soil, pledging allegiance to Osama bin Laden,2 and acting “on a religious order from bin Laden.” He reportedly told interrogators: “I am proud to carry out his orders.”

London car bomb 'packed with nails and gas'

London escaped what could have been its worst terrorist attack this morning when a car bomb packed with nails, gas canisters and containers of petrol apparently failed to detonate outside a popular West End nightclub hosting a 'ladies' night'. Police were called to Tiger Tiger nightclub on Haymarket near Piccadilly Circus shortly before 2am when smoke was seen coming from the inside of a Mercedes car parked outside. Unconfirmed reports said that a man had been seen running away from the vehicle. Inside officers discovered "significant quantities" of petrol, believed to be 60 litres, plus nails and gas cylinders. Car bomb would have caused huge fireball

The “patio gas” bomb defused in Haymarket would have generated a fireball the size of a house, according to one of Britain’s leading explosives experts. Police avert car bomb 'carnage'

…A police source said the bomb was a "big device" and had posed a real and substantial threat to the hundreds of revellers leaving the area's bars and nightclubs. Dozens of forensic officers examined the scene and the car was taken to the Forensics Explosives Laboratory in Kent for further tests. Sky Reporter Emma Birchley explained: "An eyewitness said at around 1:30am this morning the car was driven erratically into some bins which were close to Tiger Tiger, a bar and nightclub in the Haymarket. "The car crashed. Allegedly the driver got out and ran away. Police have defused a car bomb found near Piccadilly Circus in London's West End. The "explosive device", discovered at 2am, posed a real and substantial threat to the surrounding area, according to a police source. Analysis: how police will track bomber's car

…The job of anti-terrorist officers will be made easier by the number plate recognition system. This allows officers to input the registration of the Mercedes and find out where else it had been in the capital. A Scottish judicial review body ruled Thursday that a former Libyan intelligence official jailed for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing might have been wrongfully convicted and was entitled to appeal the verdict against him. Report: Problems in Iraq force training

A congressional report criticized the training given to Iraqi military and police forces and said they aren't capable of handling security on their own.  The House of Representatives Armed Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee said the Iraqi police and security forces' capabilities are "very uneven," Voice of America reported Thursday. Appeal Recommended for Lockerbie Bomber

A former Libyan intelligence agent may have been wrongly convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, a judicial panel said Thursday, recommending that he be granted a new appeal. Al-Sadr Vows to Go Ahead With March

Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr vowed Thursday to go ahead with a planned march to a devastated shrine in central Iraq but insisted the goal is not to confront Sunnis who live along the way. Instead, al-Sadr said the march is aimed at bringing Shiites and Sunnis closer together and breaking down the barriers imposed by the Americans and Sunni religious extremists.
