Those with War on Terrorism responsibilities have a Professional Duty to know the enemy.

Note this page is not called "Recommended Reading" because intelligence professionals must take the time to read books that explain the mindset, motivations, laws and doctrines that guide Islamic Jihadist terrorists who want to kill Americans--here in the US or overseas.

As a member of the US national security/homeland security community whose ultimate and only job is to protect the United States and U.S. citizens, you do not have the luxury of participating in the philosophical debate of what Islam supposedly is or isn't. In order to protect lives, you must know what the jihadi terrorists think and say Islam is and what Islamic Law and Doctrine states--because they act on those beliefs, whether their views of Islam are wrong or right.

Reading the following books will help you gain a better understanding of this threat. Many of the authors have to publish under pen names and live in hiding to protect themselves (Islamic apologist authors don't have to do this). They have provided us a warning--wake up and listen to what they have to say.

The Suicide of Reason: Radical Islam's Threat to the West by Lee Harris

Whether by choice or not, the West finds itself in a low-grade yet bitter war with Islamic fanaticism. It is a war the West is singularly ill equipped to fight. The foe is resistant to any of the normal methods of conflict resolution such as negotiation, economic sanctions, or conventional armed confrontation. For more than 10 years, Emerson has studied Islamic groups that operate in the United States for the express purpose of funding and managing deadly terrorist organizations. American Jihad summarizes what he has learned, and it isn't comforting.

Militant Islam Reaches America by Daniel Pipes

Pipes explains what exactly militant Islam is and stresses the large and crucial difference between Islam, the faith, and militant Islam the ideology. He demonstrates that there is no clash of civilizations underway, but a battle for the soul of Islam among Muslims themselves. He shows that militant Islam is not mainly caused by poverty and that its adherents, far from being the dispossessed, tend to include the more talented and Westernized elements. Militant Islam has strikingly much in common with fascism and communism. Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Why I Am Not a Muslim by Ibn Warraq

This remarkable book, written in 1995 as a response to the Islamic fatwa against author Salman Rushdie, is extremely relevant today (if only we had read Warraq's book ten years ago!). He critically examines the Koran, the origins of Islam, Islamic law, the totalitarian nature of this religion-political system, non-compatibility of Islam with democracy and human rights, and more. A quote from the beginning of the book by scholar E. Renan: "Muslims are the first victims of Islam."

Why I Left Jihad: The Root of Terrorism and the Return of Radical Islam by Walid Shoebat

The author was a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and participated in acts of terror and violence against Israel. Later, he moved to the US to continue his anti-Israel activities. Inside Al Qaeda: How I Infiltrated the World's Deadliest Terrorist Organization by Mohamed Sifaoui

In February 1996, Mohamed Sifaoui, an Algerian-born journalist, survived a bomb attack that killed several friends and colleagues-and thirty passers-by. Ye'Or: "Over the years, Euro-Arab collaboration developed at all levels: political, economic, religious and in the transfer of technologies, education, universities, radio, television, press, publishers, and writers unions. This structure became the channel for Arab immigration into Europe, of anti-Americanism, and of Judeophobia, which — linked with a general hatred of the West and its denigration — constituted a pseudo-culture imported from Arab countries. The interpenetration of European and Arab policies determined Europe's relentless anti-Israel policy and its anti-Americanism."

Al Qaeda in Europe: The New Battleground of International Jihad by Lorenzo Vidino

The July 2005 London bombings are yet another example of how Europe has emerged as one of the key battlegrounds in the global War on Terror. The region has become a critical "ground zero" for Islamist terrorists, not only as a target but as a base of operations. The implications for the United States are tremendous: under existing law, for example, terrorists carrying European passports could easily enter the country. It is not a coincidence, in fact, that every attack planned or executed against the United States, including 9/11, has had strong European ties. The book shows how terrorists—most of them native to the Continent—raise money, communicate, and hide in plain sight in the suburbs of London, Paris, and Amsterdam. It presents with painful clarity the difficulties that law enforcement agencies worldwide have had in shutting terror cells down. Finally, the book describes three of the most important networks operating in Europe. Londonistan by Melanie Phillips

Londonistan has become a country within the country and not only threatens Britain but its special relationship with the U.S. as well.
 

While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West from Within by Bruce Bawer

Bawer writes about a menace called radical Islam rings Europe's cities in smoldering Muslim ghettos, provoking everything from so-called honor killings and political assassinations to the Madrid subway bombings and the massacre of school children in Beslan. Worse, the Taliban-like theocracy Bawer sees looming inside backward immigrant populations resistant to integration flourishes under the protective wing of Western Europe's America-bashing, multicultural, liberal establishment. The latter correspond to the appeasers of Nazi Germany, in Bawer's view, since he believes that radical Islamism is every bit the threat to Western civilization that Nazism was.

Why England Slept by John F. Kennedy

Written by John F. Kennedy in 1940 when he was still in college and reprinted in 1961 when he was president, this book is an appraisal of the tragic events of the thirties that led to World War II. It is an account of England's unpreparedness for war and a study of the shortcomings of democracy when confronted by the menace of totalitarianism.

The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims edited by Andrew Bostom

This unique, extensive compilation includes Muslim theological and juridical texts, eyewitness historical accounts by both Muslim and non-Muslim chroniclers, and essays by preeminent scholars analyzing jihad war and the ruling conditions imposed upon the non-Muslim peoples conquered by jihad campaigns. The Legacy of Jihad reveals how, for well over a millennium, across three continents—Asia, Africa, and Europe—non-Muslims who were vanquished by jihad wars, became forced tributaries (called dhimmi in Arabic), in lieu of being slain. Under the dhimmi religious caste system, non-Muslims were subjected to legal and financial oppression, as well as social isolation. Extensive primary and secondary source materials, many translated here for the first time into English, are presented, making clear that jihad conquests were brutal, imperialist advances, which spurred waves of Muslims to expropriate a vast expanse of lands and subdue millions of indigenous peoples. Finally, the book examines how jihad war, as a permanent and uniquely Islamic institution, ultimately regulates the relations of Muslims with non-Muslims to this day.

This comprehensive, meticulously documented collection of scholarly articles presents indisputable evidence that a readily discernible, uniquely Islamic antisemitism--a specific Muslim hatred of Jews--has been expressed continuously since the advent of Islam. Debunking the conventional wisdom, which continues to assert that Muslim animosity toward Jews is entirely a 20th-century phenomenon fueled mainly by the protracted Arab-Israeli conflict, leading scholars provide example after example of antisemitic motifs in Muslim documents reaching back to the beginnings of Islam.

The Myth of Islamic Tolerance: How Islamic Law Treats Non-Muslims by Robert Spencer

This book brings to light the deeply ingrained historical, cultural, and religious elements of a profound modern crisis--the violence, fanaticism, and contempt for outsiders that characterizes much of the Islamic world today. This wide-ranging group of essays clearly explains how these poisonous attitudes are rooted in laws and cultural habits that are connected organically to the concept of jihad and its corollary institution, dhimmitude--which are in turn a primary impetus for global terrorism today.

Islam and Dhimmitude: Where Civilizations Collide by Bat Ye'Or

The author makes four main points: (1) The commonly claimed Islamic tolerance of "protected peoples" (dhimmis) is a historical falsehood that conceals the normative reality of jihad (holy war) as much as it does Jewish and Christian subjugation. Islam's doctrinal foundations do not tolerate "infidel" equality with Muslims, much less the self-affirmation as free peoples who aspire to liberate themselves, as in the cases of Jewish and Christian efforts in Israel and Lebanon respectively. (2) The willingness of many Middle Eastern Christians to accept dhimmitude will result not in their hoped-for symbiotic Christian-Muslim co-existence but in the disappearance of Christianity from the region. (3) Autonomous Christian civilization is currently withering in its European homeland (North America is another story). Europeans are giving way on many issues concerning Islamic practices to their increasingly assertive Muslim populations, such as permitting the muezzin's call to be broadcast in Oslo and applying the Iranian law of divorce in Germany and looking the other way from bigamy in Spain. (4) The bond of dhimmitude linking victimized Jews and Christians needs rejuvenation. It is often forgotten, as Bat Ye'or explains, that "if the Jew must be a dhimmi, the Christian, too." The author calls for a Jewish-Christian dialogue and campaign to salvage their civilizations from the Islamic assault. The author does not hold out hope, at this time at any rate, for moderate Muslims to be part of that discussion.
