Overview

Iran is currently one of the most important national security concerns facing the United States today.

Concerns about Iran include a number of significant geo-political reasons, such as:

  • May have or may be attempting to possess nuclear weapons
  • Support of terrorism
  • When necessary controls Hezbollah
  • Support of Taliban and other elements who are working against US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan
  • May support drug dealing in the region
  • Attempting to expand Shi'a Islamic hegemony
  • Increasing influence in South America, Africa and other regions
  • An aggressive intelligence service involved in the diversion and theft of technology

Iran's counterintelligence and security services monitor and suppress internal opposition in a brutal and bloody fashion. They have rightly earned the title of one of the most controlling "counterintelligence states" in the world.

Iran has repeatedly called for "Death to America"--the "Great Satan," since 1979 and it openly calls for the destruction of Israel--the "Little Satan."

Since the Iranian revolution of 1979, Iran has considered the United States its enemy, having taken US nationals as hostages for 444 days and supported terrorist attacks against US citizens.

Everyone in the US national defense/national security community as well as law enforcement communities has a compelling need and responsibility to study and understand Iran and the ideology which drives this dangerous nation state.

To address this challenge and need, the CI Centre, in partnership with the US Intelligence Community, is providing the following training courses:

1701: Crossroads of Conflict in the Middle East

The Middle East has been at a 'crossroads of conflict' for over 2,000 years and remains so today. This course explores the imperialist and religious conflicts of this region, and discusses how Persia and now Iran has been affected.

This course is the first in a roadmap series specifically designed to train and enhance attendees' competencies in the following key subject areas: Iranian Culture, History, Leadership, Geography, Military, Policy and Security.

Attendees will gain an understanding of how and why Iran’s current clerical leadership seeks hegemony within Islam and in the Middle East, pursues WMD, savages its own people, and supports terrorism.

Topics covered in the first course will provide students with an understanding of the cultural and religious perspective of Iranian Persian Empire history and modern day Iran.

This course explores the evolution of Islam and Islamic doctrine and the advent of Shi’a Islam in Iran; the main precepts of Shi’a Islam; the clerical hierarchy of Shi’a Islam; and the concept of Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Jurisprudent).

It will explore the role of Persian culture and how the tensions between Sunni and Shi’a Islam play in Iranian foreign and security policy.

An overview of the Iranian Constitution will set the framework for a discussion of how Iran’s revolutionary leadership perceives its ‘divine’ duty to live Islamic law at home and spread it by terror abroad.

The course includes an in-depth discussion of the mindset and tactics of terrorists in the Middle East; ending with a tactical view of Hezbollah and their operations. (5 days)

1702: The Islamic Republic of Iran: Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Terrorism and Geopolitical Issues in the Modern Age

The is the second part of a two-week course that continues the odyssey of Iran learning begun in Fundamentals of Iran 1701.

This course will arm participants with the core knowledge they need to assess Iranian security threats and analyze Iran’s relationship with organizations like Hezbollah.

The focus of 1702 will be on Iran’s security institutions, US and Iranian counterintelligence efforts, Iran’s role in terrorism, including state-sponsored terrorism proxies and terrorist allies, and Iran’s interactions and key alliances with other nations such as North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, China and Russia.

The course discusses essential knowledge and skills to understand modern Iranian Culture and how to use this information in interviewing techniques. Using the information the course discussed practical lessons in developing and handling Iranian and Middle Eastern sources of information.
